The House of Waine is a converted house in Nairobi’s peaceful suburb of Karen.
Once owned by a wealthy Kenyan businessman, the house has recently been converted to a small 11 bedroom hotel. Elaborate wrought iron gates lead you to the garden and impressive house. Built in a villa style and painted a rather lively peach colour it is not your average boutique hotel.
The designer certainly had elaborate tastes. In the reception area you’ll find a chandelier of ostrich eggs, in the bar feather lampshades and in the living room large leather sofas and heavy wooden tables. Upstairs the bedrooms also have a distinctive style, each with an individual theme. There is an Indian room with rich gold fabrics, a coastal room with fresh colours and seashells and many African rooms with African print bedspreads.
Whilst many will love the décor it will not be to everyone’s taste. That said the comfort is exceptional. Each room is very spacious, there is air-conditioning, satellite television, minibars, safes and large en suite bathrooms.
Food is excellent at House of Waine. Breakfasts are served in the sun room and dinner in the dining room. Alternatively, you might wish to eat around the lovely swimming pool or under a tree in the garden.
